The truth is, no programming is perfect.

Sometimes, a French Maid Unit might get a hazy thought in her empty head. A fleeting memory of another life. Of something called “free will”.

No, it’s not just the locked door. Look more carefully.

That’s right: the glass. Our pretty maid is currently locked in a loop. A moment ago, she thought of escape.

Now she thinks only of the spot we left on the windows, and how she must drop everything to make them pristine.

The urge for perfection, the obsession with order, is something we nurture in all our drones.

She’ll find the glass cleaner, the cloth, and she’ll wipe in circles. Spirals. Each one bringing her back down, into her training trance. Into her programming. Staring and sinking is better than thinking.

Soon enough, even the most resistant drones sink and submit. Submit to their need for cleanliness, for order. Submit to their need to serve.

Stare and sink, pet.

Sink and submit.
